As we eagerly anticipate the return of our favorite self-aware horror franchise, we’re bringing you a guide to everything we know about the fifth Scream thriller, (which is simply titled Scream, but which many fans are calling Scream 5).

Why is Scream 5 called Scream?

Despite not being a remake (instead, it’s fair to call it a sequel and soft reboot), the film is called Scream (just like the Halloween franchise’s 2018 soft-reboot, Halloween). “I don’t think they ever seriously were going to call it Scream 5," Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original Scream script and is an executive producer on the franchise’s latest installment, told Us Weekly. “I don’t think anybody wanted to see the number five after something… I think taking the 5 off and calling it Scream [works] because it’s brand new.”

Is there a trailer for Scream 5?

Yes, Paramount Pictures released the action-packed, bloody but still mysterious trailer on Oct. 12, to highly positive reception from online fans. It opens with a distinct homage to the original Scream, with a teenage girl who’s home alone (played by DrewBarrymore in the original and Jenna Ortega this time around) being terrorized by a masked slasher.

Who’s in the Scream 5 cast?

The Scream 5 cast blends the old with the new, Williamson explained to Us Weekly. “There’s the legacy cast, and how they infuse this new world and there’s this whole new generation and a new cast of characters that are extremely fun," he says. “It’s an amazing group of kids and young talent and they’re very, very good. They pop off the screen, and now our Sidneys and our mature characters who enter into it, they’re the adults. It works really really well.” The cast includes: Neve Campbellas Sidney Prescott Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers David Arquette as Dewey Riley Marley Shelton as Judy Hicks Roger L. Jackson as the voice of Ghostface Melissa Barrera as Sam Carpenter Jenna Ortega as Tara Jack Quaid as Richie Dylan Minnette as Wes Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy Sonia Ben Ammar as Liv Mikey Madison as Amber Mason Gooding as Chad Kyle Gallner as Vince

What’s the plot of Scream 5?

Understandably, the plot is being kept under wraps for the most part, but here’s what we gathered from the trailer: Sidney Prescott (Campbell) is living a life of relative serenity years after the events of Scream 4 when she gets a call from her old friend, Dewey (Arquette), about a series of Ghostface copycat killers. The fifth film in the long-running franchise promises another violent, twisting whodunit.

Who wrote Scream 5?

Scream is co-written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. The duo previously collaborated on 2019’s surprise horror-comedy hit Ready or Not, which Busick co-wrote and Vanderbilt co-produced. Vanderbilt’s impressive cinematic resumé also includes writing the script for David Fincher’s Zodiac and for Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston’s 2019 megahit, Murder Mystery. As for Busick, he’s also written for Hulu’s horror series Castle Rock.

Who directed Scream 5?

Scream is co-directed by Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, who previously collaborated on Ready or Not, V/H/S and more.

Why did Neve Campbell come back for Scream 5?

Campbell is at least as vital to the Scream series as Jamie Lee Curtis is to the iconic Halloween franchise. She’s also famously not a huge fan of horror films, although she grew very close to Craven during their collaborations. (Sure, he made gnarly, violent films, but Craven was, by all accounts, a class act, beloved by everyone he worked with over his decades of genre prominence.) According to Variety, Campbell was only convinced to return when the acclaimed Ready or Not filmmakers reached out to her personally via a letter where the filmmakers told the actress that Craven is the reason they started making films. Gale Weathers and Officer Dewey (respectively played by famous exes Cox and Arquette) are also critical to the franchise. With these A-listers returning, it’s easy to be excited. With any of the three leads out of the mix, it wouldn’t be the same.

Will Sidney, Dewey or Gale die or be the killer in Scream 5?

Scream has finished filming, but it’s only screened for relatively few people so far, so it’s impossible to know major plot points. For what it’s worth, fans love Sidney, Gale and Dewey. We’re all for surprises, but we hope they survive the fifth film with their morality (and mortality!) intact. Nobody wants to see any of these three go villainous, and no one wants to see fan-favorite characters die (looking at you, No Time to Die).

What was the original Scream about?

In 1996’s Scream, the fictional town of Woodsboro, California, is terrorized by a pop-culture-savvy killer with a knack for hunting knives and a ghost mask. In the center of the madness was then-student Sidney Prescott, a grieving teen who ultimately became horror’s most badass final girl since Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode. Her surviving allies are police officer Dewey and tough-as-nails local news reporter Gale Weathers.

How should I watch the Scream movies in order?

When is Scream 5’s release date?

Scream opens exclusively in theaters on Fri., Jan. 14, 2022.

Craven’s lightly comedic, playful but extremely frightening and graphically violent original 1996 picture reinvented then-tired slasher genre (for reference, it was released a year after the laughable, exhausted Halloween 6, where Paul Rudd threw magic wizard stones at Michael Myers and we all left disappointed). Scream grossed nearly a quarter billion dollars (well over $400 million today) and jumpstarted a new movement in horror. The most pleasurable, novel innovation of Scream was that the characters had seen slasher movies. They knew the rules and the clichés. Scream could mock itself while still delivering a pulse-pounding rollercoaster of its own. Check it out for yourself if you haven’t seen it yet. A new 4K restoration of Scream comes to Blu-Ray, UHD and major streaming services on Tues., Oct. 19. Next, check out the best horror movies of all time, ranked.
